Hello friends,
Icy days here, but the cats are keeping me warm. Resolution is a scary word, but come the new year I try to come up with one or two things to work on. Last year is was be brave and be a better friend. I'm sticking with those and adding be kind and try new things.
On New Years Eve at First Night Boston I tried a few things that weren't completely new, but close enough. I drank a hot toddy, went to a Japanese anime film and a poetry slam.
I don't ever need to have another toddy, except for the fact that I get to say the word toddy, but I am intrigued by anime. My only previous experience was Princess Mononoke, a wonderful film, featuring the brave princess of the forests, but there's much more to anime, and I may check out Anime Boston this spring.
As for poetry slams. I've been to many poetry readings, but never a live slam until Monday. A year or two ago, on Luke's recommendation I watched Brave (there's that word again) New Voices, a documentary about the national Youth Poetry Slam Competition
and was enthralled, moved and inspired. (A powerful poem from it in this video, and you can see this year's finals here), The one I attended on First Night was a blast. The National Poetry Slam is in Boston this summer and I'm going to find a way to get involved.
Now I need to try some completely new things. If I do, I promise I'll tell you. How's the new year treating you?

DeleteSounds good, Jen. Let's see, new things. Tomorrow I'm taking my friend Cheryl charity shop hopping and to lunch at a Greek/Turkish restaurant. She lives down the road now (having moved in with our neighbor Pat a year after meeting him on Match.com - the 3rd successful middle-aged Internet match we've observed amongst our male friends). What's new to me is taking someone along on my forays of eBay objects.

Hello Jen, Happy New Year! I havent really made any resolutions this year, I would like to try and lose some weight, that is my resolution each year!! I admire yours to try something new, its always good to do that because you may just find something you have been missing all these years!I suppose if anything I am intending to save more money, a trip to Aus may be on the cards when my son and his family emigrate there in May.

ReplyDeleteI served for my sons and the eldest's family during this three days. I like it of course, but now I'd like to travel somethere I have not visit, alone if I could. The publishing tanka book is prolonged and not yet finished, and I'm waiting for it as well.
Are you still writing tankas for the book, or is it the actual publishing that is taking time?

DeleteHello Jen, That ice picture is fantastic, with those delicate and intricate forms, and the weird growth patterns. Only a true nature lover would get outside and close enough in the winter to discover such a miniature landscape.

DeleteI love icicles. Did you read "The Lovely Bones"? Intriguing way to look at them. I tried a hot toddy once many years ago because I saw someone have it in a movie, probably something to do with Dickens, didn't like it much except for the cute word. Been to a couple of poetry slams, everyone seemed so angry, it's been a while. Glad you're trying and enjoying new things, it's a big world so much to see and learn. Happy New Year dear Jen.

They look like icy horns of reindeer:-) My new year holidays are same old ones; enjoy family reunion and new year dishes, pay a visit to a shrine and a temple. To make up for overeating and a lack of exercise,my husband and I took four-hour-walk to a shrine on the third day.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I learned slow jogging at the speed of walking was so beneficial in every aspect.It consumes about twice more energy than walking. Jogging for about 10 minutes 3 times a day seems a tip. Easier said than done, though. Oh, this may be my resolution for this year.
