a clumsy country weekend

We're having a party in a couple weeks
so much of the weekend was spent sprucing things up.
I spray painted four chairs and my feet turned green.

I slipped on mossy rocks while wading in the brook and got soaked.
It was a hot day, so it felt good to cool off,
but my camera broke.

I stopped by a barn sale and bought these chairs from the woman who made them.
(Guess how much I paid for them.)

I love the delicate twigs on the back of the one on the right, and the contrast of red wood on the other.
Unfortunately I broke the top cross stick on that one when I put it in my car.

She also made this easel, which I think is clever and charming.

A friend with a truck picked up the pie safe for me.
I'm glad it didn't fit into my car or I'm sure I would have damaged it.

  1. Hello Jen, I hope that your unlucky streak is over! Still, the green chairs look nice, and the twig chair can most likely be fixed. I am jealous of your proximity to that waterfall/brook--I feel cooler just looking at the picture.

I recently got back to Ohio for a while, and will do my best to write a few posts from here.

    1. So far I'm in one piece.

Hope you're enjoying Ohio--if you don't have time to post there, take pictures and post when you do have time--I'd love to hear about it.

  2. The easel stands on your garden? How nice! I admire these idea of repainting the chairs and making them of natural materials.

    1. I didn't buy the easel--it wasn't for sale, though I'm sure she would have sold it to me if I asked. Maybe I'll ask her to make one for me. She is so sweet and her prices are so low that I felt like I was robbing her.

  3. I hope you didn't pay much for the chairs -- reliable pieces of furniture they look not to be. As fey objects, well, that's another matter. Like your dark red chairs and table.

    1. I don't think anyone will try to sit on them--I thought about putting a flowering plant on them, but I like them as is--they're so folk arty. Fey is a great word. I paid $15 each and felt guilty about not paying more.

I got the red chairs from LL Bean a zillion years ago and they've held up well. The table is old.

  4. O.K. Jen, those chairs are seriously amazing and I love the color !! Kudos on finding the pie safe too.
    Twig chairs charming.

I hope you didn't bruise anything except your camera!

    1. The metal chairs had a lot of rust but were easy to fix up.
One of those chairs would look great in your shop with a bucket of flowers of a bunny on it!

No bruises, and I was truly grateful for the forced cooling off. Fortunately my camera is a $99 point and shoot and not something valuable!

    1. I really am pretty clumsy, though I prefer to call it absent-minded.

  6. Those vintage porch chairs are awesome and that green is the perfect color! The window box easel with the frame could not be any more charming.

    1. I got the chairs at an auction. They were off white, and the part of the arms that curves down into the legs was red. It looked great, but there was rust and I was too lazy to try to replicate. The forest green works well.

That easel would be so easy to make--It's just 3 sticks.

  9. I love those chairs (both sets but I'll start with the vintage) a neighbor has them in white with light blue accents on them, I covet them. I do love the green you chose. The twig chairs are charming, I love anything made from twigs and adirondacky (?). I didn't know you were such a klutz :)Too bad about your camera. Have a nice party and stay away from glass.

  10. Jen... Oh my...glad you weren't hurt. Understand the problem.. I can trip over air. If Mama had wanted Grace in the family should have named me that! Crushing on the twig chairs and easel... Have some limbs cut from my crepe myrtles . Ummm... Wondering if I could? Your paint job is perfect and the pie safe divine! Enjoy preparing for the party.

  11. Oh, this kind of clumsiness often happens to me! I'd feel embarrassed but laugh away. It's good you didn't get hurt.
Your renewed chairs look cool. I like those seemingly shaky but simple and natural and playful wooden chairs and a charming idea of easel.
    Have a happy party, Jen.

  12. I spray painted 2 old outdoor chairs from Ikea black wearing flipflops.

I would say I won't do that again but I bet I will...

All furniture fabulous and envy producing.

    As is the scenery.

Be careful please. You're too important to lose.
