after Sandy

Hunkered down yesterday, watching the wind gust and blow.

This morning tree limbs and branches everywhere.

But it's nothing compared to what's going on in New York and New Jersey.

“Although the wind ...”

BY IZUMI SHIKIBU
TRANSLATED BY JANE HIRSHFIELD AND MARIKO ARATANI
Although the wind
blows terribly here,
the moonlight also leaks
between the roof planks
of this ruined house.

  1. Hello Jen and Greetings from Ireland

I am so glad that you are safe and well.

I feel for your countrymen/women it
    must be dreadful.

Trees down not good, but at least no "real" damage done.

    Take care of yourself

    What a nightmare.

    Glad you "weathered the storm".

  3. Hello Gen, I'm glad that you had such limited damage. Your waterfall must be a violent torrent with all this added input.

    1. Hmmm...Washington County? Catskills house is in Delaware County, which had no flooding, just some power outages and lots of trees down. Above is at my Mass. house in Norfolk County.

  6. How nerve wracking! Glad everything is okay. Two hundred trees came down in the town where my son lives in CT, but their power managed to stay on. I just can't imagine Manhattan...

    1. It's hard to grasp. Some will get back to normal quickly, others it will be a very long time.

  15. I didn't even realise the storm extended as far as you ... so glad you suffered no severe damage. We watched and listened in horror as the full extent of the damage in New York was broadcast. Praying that all those affected can rebuild their lives as quickly as possible. M x
