Walden Pond was larger than I expected--at 62 acres it looks like a lake. I walked the path that loops around it.
A beach for families.
A few kayakers.
Many semi-secluded areas where stone steps lead directly into the pond. Shirts and hats hang from branches, scattered books and shoes...a mother swims with her daughters at one, a pair of teenage girls at another, an elderly man, four guys with beer...each enjoying a secret place.
Swimming and floating and drifting...
I will write another time about Thoreau and his cabin, which is what I expected Walden Pond to be all about. What I found felt remote, serene, personal--like a lake in Maine or northern Vermont, though it is just a short distance from Boston.
What a pretty spot... i can see how Thoreau was inspired there..
ReplyDeleteI was inspired too--it's a special place.
DeleteI love this. I too thought it was a pond just big enough for a man and his thoughts.
ReplyDeleteWell kept secret.
xo Jane
"just big enough for a man and his thoughts"--love that!
DeleteWhat a fab place.I love sharing your landscape pictures and getting a glimpse of where you live and holiday.
ReplyDeleteAnd I get to edit out all the messy parts of my life. :)
DeleteWhat a surprise!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see that Walden Pond is still so idyllically beautiful. I had heard that encroaching development was endangering the area.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Concord will ever change, and the pond is on a preserve, but who knows?
Delete1 guess what kindle book i 'bought' (free) 2 days ago?
ReplyDeleteyep. Walden.
fun coincidence huh?
i just adore lakes. we were just watching a house program and they showed a lake in Turin Italy, they're so serene. although i a a wild sea girl, a calm lake draws me too.
At heart (soul?) I am a wild sea girl too--but I love all bodies of water.
DeleteThe water really looks blue and green, so beautiful! I only know Thoreau by name but looking forward to your post.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling I will be writing a few posts about Thoreau!
DeleteI could see many aspects of the pond thanks to you, Jen. How comfortable even just to see your photos. I've never have the idea to swim in a pond because I was taught it's not safe when I was a kid, but it seems it's not right here.
ReplyDeleteThis pond is very deep--over 100 feet, in places! It was very clean and beautiful.
DeleteWhat beauty! Inspired by many of your posts, I indulged in several free books on Kindle by Thoreau. Am currently reading Cape Cod. When I move on to read Walden I have a true mental picture. What a lovely peaceful spot! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful. I am currently reading from his journals. I will be writing more about him here.
ReplyDeleteThat is quite a large pond. I never realized; nor did I think people were allowed to swim in it.
ReplyDeleteI'm so mad at myself that I never went before!
Deletewonderful post
ReplyDeleteWhat Thoreau did brings back memories of a family member i use to visit as a child.
He built a house for himself and his wife in the middle of the woods deep in the Pocono mountains very far away from any other people.
It was a beautiful home of stone and wood that would put most houses in today's developed areas to shame.
They lived very happily together in a world of full of foxes, deer and bears.
That is a lovely memory, Paul. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteWow, it's huge...and beautiful. Not what I expected (the hugeness). I love what looks like two different colors of water, almost like the Caribbean and the Atlantic. Never expected that from a "pond". Can't wait for the cabin.
ReplyDeleteI love the different colors of the water too. Pretty sure it has to do with shady vs. sunny. And clean water.
ReplyDeleteI made a late delivery to Chelmsford the other day and took the back roads, which included Walden Pond (on my way to catch sight of Opal). At 6:45 the pond was still packed with people!!! The Parking Lot was FULL! It is a special place so close to Boston.
ReplyDeleteYou describe it so well, though I think seeing a beach & swimmers there would have been hard. The Walden Pond in my mind is solitary, a hidden world....
ReplyDeleteIt's just a short walk to get pat the beach area. And I enjoyed seeing the occasional swimmer and sojurners on the rest of the walk. I was there mid-week and it was quiet. I imagine weekends are busier.
