the critique

I've started painting again. Tiny seascapes. I'll show you soon. Maybe. For now I want to share these pictures I got at an auction a while back. They've been sitting in the store for ages. They are framed critiques of studies done by a Miss Hildebrand.


The upper left is a photograph of the scene she painted. If you click on the picture it should enlarge enough for you to read the comments.


I wonder if Miss Hildebrand had them framed? Or her parents/children/husband/lover?

They are beautifully framed. Lovingly. I wish I knew the back story.

    Nice to know you restarted painting. I gave up to paint long time ago, but I would be happy if I could. The style of these paintings intriguing....

    These are wonderful, any idea on the year(s)? Can't wait to see your work, hopefully soon. BTW, great article in today's NY Times on the comeback of the Catskills, did you see it?

    No real idea of the year. Given the use of "Miss" and the look of the photograph a broad guess would be somewhere between 1940 and 1960. If I took them our of the frames there might be more info.

    I am one of the people who equated Catskills with Borscht Belt until I visited. I think rebranding is a good idea. It's four big counties, very rural, filled with wilderness and dairy farms...
