Through the week I've watch the orange roses (here) go from debutantes
to roses of a certain age.
The color gradations knock me out.
These abstract closeups help me see them in a new way.
For me, that's what art does.
Yesterday, I finished a quasi-impressionistic painting of roses
and painted this
I have a green land, pink seas series in mind
inspired by the peony bud in this post.
Peonies, they took over our lives for a while, didn't they?
That first one knocks my socks off - I am actually wearing socks with my sandals. I immediately titled it "Briar Rose", thinking of Sleeping Beauty's thorn-infested castle. And, yes, the peony bud certainly was an inspiration for the next two, though I think the public would see it more easily in the second of the two paintings. Glad your talent is expressing itself.
ReplyDeleteaww Karen, thanks. I wasn't consciously thinking of the peony bud when I painted, but looking at them after reminded me.
DeleteHave you seen Irving Penn's Flowers book?
ReplyDeleteYes, I own it, and almost referred to it here. Should have. Another post.
DeleteJen..the orange roses from your previous post were lovely. Watching the colors deepen as the roses matured would be inspiring! I have been unable to resist both orange roses and tulips when available..I treat myself to these lovelies. How could we resist obsessing over peony prettiness? Pink is always a favorite ...last night's sunset over the Gulf was infused with pink...a magnificent sight that no camera or iPad could capture! Enjoy your painting ...I love the way your colors reach out to each other blending into such harmony. Smiles...Susan
ReplyDeleteSusan, you are so sweet! I hope you are having a wonderful vacation. You are so right, we really can't capture those places and moments in nature. We can only try…
ReplyDeleteJen,
ReplyDeletethese paintings are stunning, simply stunning. thank you for sharing these with lucky us. I'm in awe of your talent and especially, your ways with color.
Diane on a blah day
in Denver
Thanks, Diane. That mean a lot to me. I know abstract art is not to everyone's taste.
DeleteHope your day got brighter.
these are fantastic. the photos as well as your paintings. stunning work. and so you!
ReplyDeleteWow, Petra. Thank you.
DeleteHello Jen,
ReplyDeleteLove your art work of the roses. You are very brave. You have let it all flow onto the canvas from your minds perspective of the changes. super.
Amazing how roses change each and every day, when blooming.

Lovely insight Val. The pictures of your roses are such a treat--I can only imagine how beautiful they are in real life.
DeleteI see a peony in the first painting...maybe because I'm still enamored with thoughts of green land / pink seas. I think of that photo and quote often. To move people that way is a gift.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to more of your interpretations.
Thank you, Sarah. That means a lot to me.
DeleteAll three paintings are beautiful. I can't decide which one I like best, if I was at a gallery wanting to purchase one I would probably be pushed out at closing still trying to make up my mind. Peonies are the stuff of obsession, not only for their incredible beauty but their fleetingness.
ReplyDeleteWhoa, Amelia. Thank you. And that' a great point about the fleetingness of peonies. In some ways they look so robust, but a heavy rain destroys them.
