a country weekend, autumn

I rarely get to the country at the peak of fall colors,
always a little early or a little late.
But this year it couldn't have been more beautiful.

Mesmerizing, inviting reverie and giddy moments,
fleeting glimpses of the profound.
Nature. Earth.

The backroads of upstate New York ablaze.

For the first time, I saw the changing color of the ferns,
how lovely they are.
Our property is shady and damp, filled with ferns,
so why haven't I ever taken this in before?
I could study this landscape for the rest of my life
and never see it all.

  3. Hello Jennifer, I was worried that this year I might miss your wonderful Catskill fall photos--they have become an institution for me! Also, I know what you mean about nature always presenting something new--even familiar scenes or plants that have been examined before have new secrets to offer.

    1. That's so nice, Jim--it means a lot to me. I've been debating whether to post the Rilke poem Autumn, which I've done every year.

  4. Such beautiful photographs you share today, thank you. It has been a dream of mine to get out and see the famous autumn colors of New England. Until I do, I shall live vicariously through your photography. Utterly charming!

  5. Totally gorgeous.
Maybe they didn't change so drastically in previous years? It's funny how we seem to only be able to be present for a finite number of beautiful things.

    1. I honestly think that I just saw them as part of the larger landscape, but not for themselves, though I suppose it's possible that I missed the place between green and brown. I feel like every year I am fine tuning my lens a bit, seeing more.

    1. Me too. Spring is pretty great, but inconsistent. Fall is brisk and moody and golden.

  14. Hi Jen,
I was there (Arlington, Belmont, Winchester, Cambridge) from 9/22 to 10/6 so caught the earlier of the changing leaves. And even that was magnificent! I'd like to return this week to Mt. Auburn Cemetery to see those Champion trees in full color. We found Winslow Homer's grave & placed some small rocks & seashells in homage to a great master. Thought of you then. Love your pix and post. Best,
    Diane Back in Denver now

    1. Can you believe I've never been to Mt; Auburn? Shame on me! I'll have to rectify that.

    2. Oh, I think you would enjoy it greatly. So much Mass. & New England history is represented. And there are many large, fine traditional statues. Quite charming. I also got to Mass. Audubon's Habitat in Belmont for the 1st time. So beautiful!
      Best,

  16. Don't you think that Instagram has helped with seeing things? I have really begun to notice the smallest changes, and definitely spend longer looking in just one place - it is something I never would have thought possible!
