sweet things

I am eating my way through Manhattan. My day started with the perfect flaky croissant. A few hours of meandering through Greenwich Village and SoHo led to lunch at Shanghai Cafe in Chinatown. A wander through Little Italy, the Lower East Side and the East Village called for a hot chocolate stop. Dinner was the best mac and cheese ever, at Murray's Cheese Bar, followed by cupcake tasting at Molly's.

Good thing I did all that walking.

I am in town to dip my toe in the wedding planning for this sweet couple. (Yes, that's my son. No, that's not Manhattan.) Hence the cupcake tasting. This also involves visiting a few florists--such a treat--you know how I feel about flowers.

Snow is blowing, lights are twinkling, and I don't have to shovel.

  1. What a cute couple. Is she foreign born? I ask this because you seem to be doing the wedding planning as though her mother wasn't available. Jen, you are always such a tease for a curious person such as I am. I need details!

    1. Oh no, sorry to mislead--she, her mother (who was with us last night for dinner and cupcake tasting) and my son are doing all the planning. I put in a special request for flower involvement--the cupcakes were a bonus.

    1. I'm lucky that they are taking care of most of it--I get to avoid the stress and enjoy the fun stuff.

  3. Good way to spend a day in Manhattan. I love Murray's Cheese Bar so now I'm pining for some mac and cheese but I'm not budging because as I'm sure you know, the snow's coming down and it is brutally cold out there today (although I'm sure Mass. is much more brutal so you're in the tropics). Your son and his fiancee are adorable, and so is their pet. Have fun! Stay warm.

    1. I eat (and make) a lot of mac and cheese and this really was the best.
Yesterday wasn't that cold--today I really will have to bundle up. Lucky me, avoiding the deep snow of Boston. Here, the sidewalks are clear already.

    1. So much good food!

It's not bad--NY rarely shuts down for snow. Though I have a feeling the museums will be packed.

  5. Congratulations to the happy couple! It's a chilly time to be wandering around New York; you're a good mom. Stay warm!

    1. It was great yesterday--only about 30 degrees and not windy. Downtown where the buildings are low doesn't get that raw feeling of midtown.

  6. O, Jen! what beautiful grandchildren you'll have!!
I'd love to hear the 'dish' on the florist's visits.
I see now the elephant connection. xoxoxo

  7. Hi Jen, What a nice set of errands to take you to NYC. They will do the smart thing by relinquishing the flower duties to you.

  8. That all sounds marvelous to me...a fabulous first week of the new year. :) I love NYC in the wintertime, especially around the holidays. It's so magical.

Hope this year is a good one for you. ♥

  9. Cupcakes, flowers, New York, and young love... Awesome! Enjoy the process... It is so much fun to watch (and participate as requested) the bridal couple. Our son and daughter-in-love met while attending the University of Georgia so we had a red and black, Athens, Georgia extravaganza! Keep us updated... You know we want to know about the MOG's dress, the mom-son dance, oh, so many details! Happy, Happy 2014! Susan

    1. Funny, when I did dinner with my son last night he mentioned that one of his friends who recently moved to NY went to U. of GA.

Although I rarely write about family stuff here I know I won't be able to resist some wedding pictures and details!

    2. The time leading up to Cliff and Gwendolyn's wedding was just magical so I wish the same for your children. On a fun note, the judge who officiated at their marriage was also a UGA alum who knew their passion for all things Georgia. After he pronounce them man & wife, he lead those gathered in a "GO Dawgs!" chant. He also had a "G" logo sewn to the front of his robe! Thinking your son's friend would understand this kinda madness! Fun memories! Enjoy this time!

    1. Val--I remember that fairy tale wedding!

I'm not a serious cupcake fan--but these were amazing. I plan to take some home with me, and will try not to eat them all on the train.

You are very close--they were in Thailand, at an elephant sanctuary.

    2. Oh that's too bad. My daughter is shadowing a tech investment company for a few days so I am here to keep her company. NYC is great even in this terrible weather. We saw Wicked. What a show! And ate great food every day. I hope you had a good visit. Christa
