small things

I counted six different types of tracks in the snow. Birds and squirrels are regular visitors, occasionally I see rabbits, and a possum and fox have put in an appearance this winter. I keep putting out food, and am rewarded by sweet sights every time I look outside.

I painted all day, and tonight's dinner was red pepper hummus, feta cheese, pita bread, carrot sticks and strawberries. Dessert: Cranberry orange ricotta cake from Trader Joes--it's delicious.

Emails have been flying back and forth as decisions are made for the wedding flowers. We all like blues and deep purples for the bride and boutonnières with things like pine needles and rosemary. I've gone down the Pinterest rabbit hole with bouquets.

I finished Body & Soul by Frank Conroy, and give it a near universal recommendation--it's smart, deep, and heartwarming.

I hope you are having a pleasant weekend (and staying warm).

Jen

  1. The red pepper humus sounds like one of my dinners. Simple, actually more than simple, but oh so good. I'll have to try the TJ cake. They have the best deserts.

    1. Their cookies are delicious too. And their breads. It's a fun place to shop.

  2. That first picture made me smile.

Who did you go with for the flowers? Or is that a last minute unveiling?

    1. Uh oh, I just switched the pictures. I hope the bird one didn't make you cry.

    2. I switched them back. You were right. Tracks first, then birds.

  3. I am helping my nephew's fiancee with ideas for her wedding flowers. It's so much fun to look for pictures and send them to her. There are so many fantastically creative florists in NYC and the flowers they can get there are just amazing. Check this blog: http://littleflowerschoolbrooklyn.com/

    1. I love flowers so it's a real treat. I am familiar with little flower school--one of the best things about blogging is I've found so many great flower/florist blogs.

  4. Love the last photo. I see - you went light on supper, then splurged on dessert. So clever.

  5. The perfect dinner for a snowy Saturday night. Love the idea of the purple flowers, rich! Is it a Winter wedding, I ask because of the pine needles. Sounds like you're enjoying the planning.

    1. No, it's late spring. It's more a style of bout, rather than pine needles specifically. Lots of texture, more woodsy than flowery.

  7. Jen.. Your photos are amazing. The tracks so linear, textural, and yet soft... beautiful. The wedding stuff is so much fun and can really emphasize the personalities of both bride and groom... happy planning! Stay warm... Susan

  9. Hi Jen, This takes me back to those old books on how to recognize animal trails that we read as kids. I love the kind of meal you describe--it's much better if instead of formally serving, you just nosh in the kitchen.
