little birds

In this bitter cold, I am putting out much more bird seed.
I bought another feeder and scatter seeds on the deck.

It's such a pleasure to watch the birds, and when the food is scattered widely they share nicely with the squirrels. A rabbit makes a regular appearance and we had a possum come by for a couple of nights, but the biggest surprise was the day I saw a red fox in my suburban Boston yard.

view from my kitchen window

Sparrow, finch, wren, dove, woodpecker, blue jay, chickadee, cardinal...
There is so much I cannot do, but I can try to take care of this tiny corner of the world.

Here I am at 2-1/2, with a pan of food to put in the feeder.

Did I take the cat for a ride on the saucer?

(Thanks to Jane for the idea of digging up old photos.)

Hope you who are sharing the polar vortex with me are warm and cozy.

Jen

  3. Well you know I love these pictures of little Jen.

And I'm so happy you are caring for the wildlife.

    Do not read my post.

I wanted to get some seed but it would be like setting out a cat buffet.

I can only hope my neighbors are as generous as you.

    1. Oh, I remember those cat buffets. They would leave them at my doorstep. One nice thing about having indoor cats.

  4. Love your picture, baby Jen. We used to feed the birds too but then we had an "incident" so we stopped. I feel bad since there are so many all over my back yard but they look so big and gorgeous, you should see the Blue Jays, that I'm sure someone else is so I don't feel so bad. We're getting warmer.

  5. A red fox - that's exciting. Possum, too. My neighbor was stopped in our driveway yesterday by a large cow moose and her calf. She was afraid her new car would get dented. Quite a vortex. Glad I no longer live back east.

  7. We love to feed the birds too but never get much more than squabbling Starlings and overweight Pigeons! Your little birds are so cute and must be very grateful for the food you leave them.
I hope you are staying warm in the freezing weather. I think the cold weather is set to blow over to us from the US in a few days to replace the flooding!
Oh, and a belated VERY Happy New Year to you!

  8. When I lived down in Talihina I could watch the birds for hours. It's amazing that they survive the vortex.
Cute photos. I love that they are in color -- shows how young you still are.

  9. I love the old pictures--you were lucky to have a woods so near--that probably fostered your love of nature.

I also recall a round snow-saucer like yours, and other commercial sleds, but our favorites were some old cookie sheets, which went lickety-split.

    1. You're right--I spent a good deal of my childhood wandering through the woods.

Love the image of the cookie sheets--and your use of "lickety-split" is perfect! Made me smile.
