the summer of wildflowers

This was the summer of wildflowers.

other summers, I enjoyed them in a careless sort of way

(aren't you pretty, let's put you in a vase)

this was the summer I slowed down

really looked

got acquainted

So now I miss them, in an intimate sort of way, like summer friends,
those searing moments
on the beach, or by the pool, except now I'm not fourteen.

Some days I was just old and tired,
other days alert, inquisitive, even happy,
this summer among the wildflowers.

  1. I love your writing! Put all together, it would be a book I couldn't put down.

and wildflowers are the best, better than any potted one...

    1. Thanks, Amelia. They aren't as beautiful as cultivated flowers, but they are special in their own way.

    1. Yes, I think it is Clematis Virginiana a/k/a Devil's Darning Needle, Virgin's Bower (two very different common names!)

  6. this is so lovely written dear Jen
I love wildflowers. I've tried to learn their names but I never seem to remember them. Still I enjoy them more than those bought from flower shop and I do miss them too.

    1. This is the first summer I've learned the names of the ones I didn't already know. It doesn't matter a bit, but when I blog I can sound knowledgable. :)

    1. I did get it (and think I emailed you-)--I love the card, what it says, and the fact that you sent it to me. It's propped up where I can see it every day. xo

  10. Hi Jen. I'm missing the summer flowers too. Last year my geraniums lasted the entire winter in the window boxes outside the kitchen windows. We get 10 months of gardening here on Vancouver Island, which seemed like a dream when we first moved here. Now I'm glad for the cooler season of moss growing! Take care.
