Aji's garden

Aji loves flowers, including eating rose petals.
(Her mother Masa is more interested in food and naps.)

She enjoys nibbling on wheatgrass too.

This is the first time I've had indoor cats, a decision made after having two cats disappear and knowing we have coyotes and fishers in the neighborhood, as well as living on a busy street. I thought it would be difficult and unfair to the cats, but it's been really easy. We give them lots of attention, playtime, nice  places to nap and look out the window.

It helps that there are two of them. The shelter will only let kittens be adopted with another kitten or the mother cat, which makes a lot of sense. My son Luke and I adopted them together. They were found under a porch when the kittens were about a week old. I don't know what kind of life Masa had before that, but she's content to stay inside.

Luke fenced off part of the yard so Aji can enjoy the sights and smells of the outdoors.

He potted plants for her garden, and I added some too. She loves it out there. He or I sit on a bench nearby and read, but she hasn't tried to escape. She enjoys chasing bugs and feeling the grass and the breeze.

Masa mostly paces, so I usually take her in after a few minutes. Apparently she had enough of the great outdoors in her previous life.

She prefers a screen between herself and the world.

  5. Hello Jen, Your house and garden both seem so pleasant and comfortable, and the cats add a perfect touch of playful domesticity.

  6. i love that you gave them a safe bit to feel grass, bugs, wind.

every cat has its personality don't they? - some retain their feral nature and need to 'hunt'. others seem content with cushions and fireplaces lol

    i'm craving a pet...

    1. I recommend a cat! Kittens are fun but adult cats are nice too, and there are so many of them looking for homes.

  7. Oh lucky ones. And I mean all of you.

My fence would have reach to the heavens to keep my two in the yard.

    And even then....

Loved getting a glimpse of your garden.

    More porridge please.

    1. We thought we'd have to put a mesh top on it, but so far so good. One of us keeps an eye on her though.

Only for you will I consider more porridge...

  10. Can I come and sleep with them in that lovely window? if only!

Is that a folding fence? I've never seen one that high.

    1. It's about 4' high and comes in 8 36" wide sections that hook together. We got two sets on ebay. They have a little door too. Not super sturdy but they are fine for the cats. I think they were advertised as puppy pens.

I know what you mean about the window. I want a sleeping porch.

  11. It looks like they really are a good company. Happy cats!
My cat is also adopted one. He was kept inside at the shelter so he didn't know at all what it was like outside. However, he is as curious as a cat. I wanted to let him smell outdoors once in a while. Timidly but curiously he plays around like your cats do for a while. Some time he comes in contently and other time I let him in.

  12. They are gorgeous cats Jen and I dont blame you for keeping them indoors. Marmalade doesnt go out much these days, maybe a walk around the back garden when we go out there but that is enough for her.

    1. I used to have a cat named Marmalade! Mine was a calico. It's the perfect name for your big orange kitty.

  13. Your cats look so happy and have everything they need. I have had both indoor and outdoor cats ... our current girl is a definite outdoor cat, although she naps indoors for most of the day now she's older. Nightimes normally result in a 'present' beng left under the kitchen table by morning though ... a mouse usually! M x

  14. What a lovely idea with the fence so she can enjoy the outdoors. She seems smart enough where she won't be going anywhere, knowing what a great home life she has. Glad to see how you're all enjoying each other.
