cats, books & cottages

Life imitates art.

The snow is dirty, the trees are bare, and I'm going searching for light.

Florida, actually. I'm leaving the day after Jane returns.
I'm looking forward to sun and flowers and bright colors.

I want a pink cottage. Or maybe a white cottage with pink flowers. And a porch.

Don't worry--there's a strong screen in the window.

My winter has been filled with cats and books. If you're looking for a fun easy read, I recommend Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore. If you like mysteries featuring eccentric villagers and a kindly detective, I recommend Louise Penny's Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series. Still Life is the first one. I'm up to the fifth and they keep getting better. They make me want a stone cottage in Quebec City or the (fictional) village of Three Pines, with plenty of hollyhocks and English roses.

What color cottage do you want?

  1. I would like Monet's 'cottage' at Giverny, thank you! at least a pink cottage with green shutters covered with roses and nasturtium with a little house for my perpetual gardener!

    Have fun in the sun!

  2. There's a little pink cottage in my neighborhood that's totally jammed into its surroundings but I've always loved it. It's got glass vestibule on the front. It was for sale when I was looking for my first place but it was out of my price range. I'm glad I didn't get it because I wouldn't have ended up where I am but I do still love it.

Warm sounds nice. I heard Florida was cold but cold is relative.

  3. Stone with green trim and lots offlowers. Or a cheery, creamy yellow with white trim. And a picket fence, and porch. And lots of flowers!

Have a great time in Florida!

    Enjoy your break.

  5. Hello Jen, I can understand the appeal of a cottage, but I still personally prefer a largish house.

I clicked on the link for Mr. Penumbra--it sounds like a fun read, but it also sounds like it might be based on The Haunted Bookshop, from 1919.

  8. My old cottage was white with an old thatch on the top and wisteria growing around the door and roses. Perfect, but a money pit! I still miss it though and all it's 'chocolate box' charm! Chel x

  11. An English cottage with a thatched roof - that is probably a money pit. Your cats will miss you. But they have each other, so don't feel guilty. Love what appears to be a signed print on the wall.

    1. Fortunately my son, who loves the cats as much as I do, is home and will take care of them.

  12. Jen... After a bit of rain here in the South today, you should be wrapped in Florida sunshine by the weekend...with warmer temperatures and a glimpse of Spring...Hopefully! My little dream cottage would have to be an old Florida house with white siding, a tin roof, and wide front porch. Of course, facing a beautiful sandy beach on either the Atlantic or the Gulf... I am really not particular! Safe travels!

    1. That sounds lovely. Someday I hope to spend some real time in the south! Was just reading about Natchez--made me want to go on a road trip.

  13. The snow is dirty and the trees are bare here too dear Jen
But the light is here! It's been sunny almost two weeks on a row and people get so excited
"Spring is here Spring is here" forgeting this is Norway and it might start snowing again any time

Still, now that the hour is not changed yet the days are long and gorgeous anyway : )

Enjoy your trip to Florida my dear!

I have never think about the color but I dream a cottage by the shore.

  15. I want the cream cottage that I already have! But I would like the unreachable (by ladder, anyway) section of the main chimney to be painted properly, like the rest of the house!

  16. My normally overactive mind can't even go there.

I just want some more sun.

    Please.

    And an arbor.

And for all of us to sit around a table in the garden of the cottage and laugh and talk and hold our faces up to the sun.

  17. I have a thing for white, maybe cause it would be such a nice backdrop for colorful cottage flowers. Good timing on your trip, missing "Saturn, Eastern Beast" Oh, brother! Have a fun time.
