how I know it's autumn

I baked gingerbread. Wore flannel. Watched football.
Thought about building a fire. Contemplated winter reading.

Decided I cannot live without warm red cabinets in the new kitchen.

How do you know it's autumn?

  1. Bright, cold crisp sunny mornings, walking through the little park kicking up the leaves! Then coming home to a nice warming cuppa and some home made cake and a bit of knitting or crochet thrown in for me!

  2. Now that I live in Taiwan, I only know it through blogs like yours. The stony book is lovely; the red cabinet looks nice, although I think that as a rule light colors in kitchens wear the best and look the cleanest.

    1. I should have included a caveat for those who are not enjoying autumn!
If I go with red I will mix it with cream. I really want a warm rustic look for that kitchen.

    2. Oh, no! I didn't realize that my first sentence could have a second meaning. Rest assured, I absolutely love Fall, and it is one of the things I miss most after leaving Ohio. I love the cool weather, the apple trees and farm stands, and of course the changing leaves--Ohio has lots of maples and just enough hills to give a few vistas, so the fall colors are fantastic.

What I meant was that now that I cannot be there in person, I am counting on your beautiful nature photographs to let me enjoy the season vicariously.

    3. You were perfectly clear! I meant that I should have referred to the fact that not everyone is experiencing autumn at the same time I am.

I love the fresh apples of autumn. I always forget how good they are!

  3. Hello Jen:
Colours in the kitchen......we are definitely not the people to ask about this a we always try to have the largest distance possible between us and this particular room in the apartment!

We know it is Autumn in Budapest when the outdoor café terraces disappear....that is so sad.....but they are still with us at the moment!!!

  4. Nice! Since you asked...Fall is the best time to visit NM in my opinion! We got back home from our travels and couldn't wait to get in the hills. It's no doubt gorgeous in your neck of the woods!

  6. Days are getting shorter, leaves are turning golden, falling off, mist in the morning, damp and that sun trying to warm but definitely not being successful anymore... Lovely post! Christa

  8. Your photo is evocative! It will take a little time to be able to see such scenery here. Your days seem to be fulfilled as usual, Jen.

    1. The changing leaves make it easy to take an evocative picture. They bring out the poet in the most prosaic people.

  9. I've read that too much red in a room raises the passions (usually irritability) - would it affect your cooking? Or inspire you to attain great heights in epicurean delights?

  12. I'm wearing a long sleeve tshirt and vacuuming up much less animal hair that usual. And as we walk the dog the neighborhood is filled with screams from people watching football!

  13. Those yellow leaves look beautiful in the water Jen. When I leave for work in the morning it's dark and cold again. I started wearing trousers and my wintercoat. In the supermarket the first St Nicolas treats are already for sale!!! So early this year!

    Happy new week!

    1. Pretty first sentence--I love the way autumn brings out the poet in all.
I too hate the darkness, on both ends of the day.

  15. Ooh! That color on your cabinets will be so cozy and warm. I love it! We are picking our pumpkins, winter squash and gourds, preserving and freezing extra garden produce, went on the first of two annual autumn camping trips, and are ready to attend the area fall art tour. It's my favorite season and I am having so much fun!

  17. The peanut fields have turned from leafy green rows to furrows of plowed plants with nubby peanuts hanging from their dying stems. The peanut wagons wobble down the highway filled to overflowing after the combine completes its work. The cotton bolls are opening and soon those mechanical monsters will be creeping down the rows picking those lovely white fluffs. Charming round bales of hay litter fields all around. I especially love the sight of these harvested fields early on a foggy morning! Your red cabinets will be stunning... I will live vicariously through you... I wanted to do this in my kitchen but was just not brave enough! Many photos, please!! Enjoy the autumn days.. wherever you are!

    1. Peanut fields and cotton bolls--that sounds amazing--a completely different landscape than we have in the NE. I hope you will post about it one day. Your description is beautiful.

  19. Mackerel sky, golden rice paddies, flowers, shining silver pampas grasses, red dragonflies, chestnuts out of burs burst open, harvest moon...what a lovely season! Autumn is beginning to enfold here too.
    I like the header picture!
