book love & postcard fun

A German bird guide. I don't read German,
but it has more that 50 beautiful color illustrations.
Keep, sell, or give away?
If you read German and like birds, it's yours.

Book bundles in the store.

 Alternate bookcase #1: a 19th century cradle.

Alternate book case # 2: an antique cranberry scoop.

Listing postcards folders in the Etsy store.
I wrote about my postcard conversion here.

What's your take on the subject of old postcards?

I see that some clever people are posting two pictures side by side on their blogs. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

Jen

  1. I feel so pedestrian and staid now for storing my books in bookshelves and shall commence the Great Book Reorganisation in Honour of Country Weekend. There are some terracotta planters I can start with.

    1. Mise--The possibilities are dazzling. Don't you have some nice pink cookware that would look good with books in it?

  2. The German bird book looks great. I'm sure there are a few German readers amongst us.

The only way I've been able to get two pictures side by side is to click and drag. Most the time it is more trouble than it's worth.

    1. There is Petra, who was born in East Germany, and I think is on her way to Singapore. But does she like birds?

I risk a nervous breakdown with anything involving click and drag or other computer demands.

  3. Hello Jen:
The German bird book looks so appealing. The cover has ore than a nod in the direction of Art Nouveau to us and the illustrations look beautifully coloured.

As for your alternative bookcases, now there is a wonderful idea! Upon running out of space in our bookcases, we have piled our overflowing book collection on the floor and on any chair not being sat on. Not now, we shall hunt around for alternatives forthwith!

    1. Dear Jane and Lance--I love the cover too, and have had the book facing out on a shelf while I ponder what to do with it.

My tables and chairs at home are also covered with stacks of books--I find them comforting. I actually love the cradle and the cranberry scoop without purpose or embellishment, but my customers are always asking for small bookshelves, which are hard to find, so I am encouraging creative thinking.

  4. Jen... I had a college professor while working on my Master's that said his friends gave him a terrible time about his book collections. They were forever telling him to NOT buy more books. I told him my thoughts were one can never have too many books... maybe he just needed new friends! And now you have given me lots of lovely new ideas for my books... there's little wooden chair that belonged to my son as a child, the pink enamel pan that served as my bathtub many, many years ago as a baby...ummmm... still thinking...........

    1. Susan--You are a gal after my own heart. Never too many books. (Except when moving.) I think books stacked on a child's chair would be adorable! And please, please post a picture of the pink enamel pan.

  6. You always enjoy the stile of life in your own way, on books too. I like vintage stuffs like old postcards, but I try to simplify my life recently, because it was a little embarrassing when my hisband's mother passed away and saw many old letters and cards and more ware left.

  7. The book is worth about $20.00. You can look it up on Bookfinder.com (change the setting from English to German language books). You might want to consider selling some of your smaller items on eBay. Looks like a lovely book.

I have trouble moving my photos about on my blog - very frustrating. It's really easier to put in photos while writing the blog, but then I lose my train of thought.

    1. Hi Anne--It really is beautiful; very simple and sturdy, and so moving to think that it held babies.

  12. Dear Jen..the only way I have ever done it is to do it in some program before uploading to blogger (have no idea what you use pc or mac..all a pain in the ass) and I am to tell you how much Joe enjoys looking at and reading your blog.

  13. my thoughts on old postcards.....they are fabulous. when i was a child and would be in antique shops and thrift shops and auctions for hours and hours with my mother, she thought it would be a good idea for me to have something to hunt for. so my collection was postcards. and it has stuck. i can't not buy an old postcard that i love. there are piles and boxes of them stashed everywhere!!!
