Downstream

When in the country the waterfall is the center of attention. It is majestic and loud and beautiful. It slows people down, they pause and contemplate. The stream it feeds into becomes an afterthought. So I've been trying to pay more attention to what goes on downstream. The smaller falls, swirls and eddies formed by rocks. The rocks themselves. Mossy, ferny twiggy things.

Icy bits are starting to form.

Thanksgiving was an eclectic bunch of friends, everyone brought something. I  made my favorite applesauce cake. I boil apple slices in apple cider so it is very apple-y. Holiday lights went up in the little towns, a wonderful thing when it gets dark at 4:00. There were lots of leftovers, and Reader, I read Jane Eyre for the first time.

  1. Jennifer, you must have read the Classics comic of Jane Eyre as I did as a kid. Then it took me until my 40s to finally read it - I think I did, anyway. I know I finally read all of Jane Austen and Wuthering Heights in my 40s. Those are wonderful photos. Really wonderful.

    1. Karen--I never did see the classic comics. I read Jane Austen late too, and will read Wuthering Heights this winter. The funny thing is I had read Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier, which is modeled after Jane Eyre twice. Don't know why I never got to it before, but I really enjoyed it. As long as we're on true confessions I've never read Middlemarch either. I'm glad you like the pictures.

    1. I'll do that!. It's really delicious--more of a tea bread than a dessert cake.

  3. Lovely photos and I like your idea of looking "downstream" - that's the place where poetry and art live, I think. A different perspective, always interesting.

PS - please do post that recipe :-]
I have an apple cake - also more of a tea bread - that a work friend gave me years ago and it remains a great favorite.
    Love your posts!

  5. Hello Jen, Although falls are significant focal points, I have always loved to explore brooks and streams as a whole. There is something about the flowing water that will lead someplace, either upstream or down; perhaps some interesting wildflowers, scenery, fossils, or historic ruins.

  6. I've been making a french apple cake that I found on Dorie Greenspan's blog years ago for Thanksgiving the past few years. This year I decided on my go to before that, a sweet potato cheesecake. We had an eclectic bunch of friends too, lots of fun and talk. I have to say I'm surprised you hadn't read Jane Eyre, I thought it was required reading in high school (that's the first time I read it). Love Wuthering Heights, areal girly book! Enjoy it!

  8. Water is life. There must be some fish swimming slowly in the stream.
