painting

This way?

Or maybe this?

A bit of turquoise?

The changes are subtle but make a difference.
Sometimes it's difficult to know when a painting is finished.

I am really getting into these dark paintings. Start with black and work out from there.

And then there are cats and flowers.

Everywhere.

  1. The first one. Jay and I agree for once. But sell them all. The cats are nice.

    1. It's actually all the same painting. I just adjusted the words to clarify (I hope). I like the first way best too.

  2. Meant to add that the first one seems more powerful in movement.

    1. Thanks. Sometimes it's hard to know when a pairing is finished. And not add turquoise.

  3. they are stunning. I couldn't tell you which one I'd like better. I would have to see them in real life, I guess. I really like this dark and expressive style of yours. what are you doing with your paintings? do you sell them?

    1. Thanks, Petra. I didn't make it clear, but the first three are the same painting, with me making adjustments.I'm not doing anything with them. But with these dark paintings I feel like I can start to build up a body of work, to try and sell.

  6. Hello Jen, Each successive version added definition, but somehow I liked the chaos of the first version. The 'series' exactly reflects the mood in Taiwan, now that the weather has become cloudy, cold and rainy, and it is already dark by 5:00. But perhaps another day I would prefer the security of the blue horizon.

    1. I agree with you, Jim. I really know very little about Taiwan--hope you will start posting again one day.

  7. Jen... 3rd... Definitely for me... But I am a Color person. Understand not knowing when you are finished... I keep saying in my head... Put down the brush... But my heart keeps saying... More...more...more! Love seeing your evolution and confidence grow. Dear Jen...The pink roses are mine if you ever decide to sell!! Keep painting and sharing! Smiles...Susan

    1. I like all three versions. I'll probably paint a bunch more of these, so I can play with all kinds of stormy days. Thank you for your kind words and encouragement.

  8. I like the first one best, I think it's because I feel I see movement. I do like them all though.

    1. Thanks, Amelia. Interesting that both you and Karen mentioned movement. I hadn't thought of it that way. It's a great observation!

  9. So, is the last one what you ended up with? Is this a lesson in less might be better? Because you probably worked fast on the first one, then fiddled around until it looked like the third one.

    1. Yes, that is the order they went in, and yes! it is a lesson. But I'm not done necessarily finished yet. One of the nice things about working in oil paints, and the glazing technique I'm using is I can work on the painting for a long time. I'm out of the studio for a few days, so will look at it with fresh eyes next week.

  10. Whoa... I liked them a lot, the first one, the flower and cats all too are deep. You can make a series of cat poses and hang them in the patio or a hall :) too nice (I am also indulged in arts! You can visit ém here: http://faheimgul.blogspot.in/p/my-paintings.html

    1. Wild and tame--I hadn't thought of it that way, but you put your finger on it. Will there be a middle ground? Love the quote.

  16. The black and white paintings bring me into the world of imagination. Shadow and light or silence and movement...... Sometimes the colorless world is more eloquent than that full of colors. Why?

    1. Oh, that is a great question. Maybe because it leaves more to our imagination, or forces us to use or other senses? Ot allows us to go into some deeper place?
