a winter country weekend

The snow on the ground was three feet deep, the waterfall thick with ice.
There was a hole in the frozen creek.
and a deer trail leading to it.
How did the hole get there?
(she pictures deer stomping on the ice)
There's so much I don't know.

  1. Hello Jen, This picture could have been taken just for me. I love the aspect of the woods in winter. I am especially taken with the surrealness of the miniature ice landscapes.

    1. Hi Jim, There was so much snow I could find any of the really wonderful weird little ice sculptures. There is something fascinating about ice--the landscape takes on a fairy tale aspect. I wait for the witch to come out of the woods.

    1. Long winters are tough in the country. You have to have friends and lots of books and firewood. It always scares me when I read about winter in the country or on farms, before cars, when people were isolated for weeks or month at a time.

  4. Maybe the deer was ice fishing? How beautiful is winter....somewhere else.

    1. I love the image of deer ice fishing! I think it's where they go for water. Cold water.

You were supposed to be safe from all this constant snow. I don't know what's happened the last two winters. The mid-Atlantic is now New England.

  5. I wonder if there is a small thermal beneath the hole. The Charles can be frozen solid but there will be melted bits in the shallows. The waterfall is a wonder. How does water freeze while it's moving. So much I dont know too!!

  8. that waterfall is amazing! oh my gosh...there's so many beautiful things in this world.

I hope it doesn't flood downstream once the ice jam melts.

  9. Beautiful isn't it? On Saturday as it was coming down yet again, after the foot and a half from Thursday that fell on the six inches of solid ice, I stared in awe at how beautiful it is. Frankly, I'm a little sick and tired of beautiful right now. But our picture is quite beautiful!

  12. Is this the first time you've found or noticed the unfrozen water there? I wonder if one deer found it and keeps coming back or if it's well known in the deer community and has become a favorite watering hole?

    1. It's the first time I've noticed. Maybe I should set up a spy camera.

  14. Such a beautiful picture! I am glad the deer can get to the water. They have to have some way to access it in a cold winter, right?! I'm glad you were out in it to get the wonderful picture.

  16. It is cold again today but a couple days ago I saw two deer walking in the shallow stream that leads to our pond which is frozen. They know things we don't.
    Lovely post.
