toe in the water

I'm trying to get off the perch, and it's scary.

I've rented a painting studio in an old textile mill in Lowell.

Long white walls.
A floor I can drip paint on.
Sky and city views.

I haven't had a place to paint big
and make a mess
since I was in college.

Exciting. Terrifying.

  1. What!? Your collages seem very smart to me so I'm not surprised but was I supposed to know you were an artist? I'm so excited for you and I can't wait to see what comes out of this space. Congratulations!

  2. I am so not an artist! Painted in college and a few years after, then moved on to other things, but I've always wanted to get back to it...

  3. Oooh, very exciting! That's wonderful. Congratulations, it seems like a beautiful and inspiring space, for some reason reminds me of a ship. There, start with blue!

    1. It's long and narrow which I think gives it the feel of a ship. Blue--yes! How many blues can I discover?

  5. Jen, that's great. I'm proud of you. Just leave before dark. I dated an attorney from Lowell way back when - half Italian, half Irish. Apparently that had been most of the ethnic makeup of Lowell in the first half of the 20th century.

But back to you. You're going to have a great year and more. I had a catalog of American Women artists (from the Museum of American Women Artist in Washington, D.C.) and it struck me that most were really old when they died, so I figured out that their average age at death was 82 or 84 (including artists from the 19th century)and I think artists live a long time because they are happy. Women artists, anyway. So, paint on, Jen, paint on.

    1. Now Lowell has a huge Cambodian and Vietnamese population, which for me means good food!

Nice thought about women artists being happy. I think part of the reason I stopped painting when I was younger is because I thought it had to mean something. Now I can just do it because I want to.

  6. Yeah, it's exciting but always scary to get off the perch. And then you would know the experience was really important. Good try and have a good time!

    1. Well, every year or two I seem to start a new venture or job, but at least with this one I am going back to something I once did and loved.

    1. I've been trying to paint at home, small and neat, but it's not working for me. Maybe because in college we always painted big. Or maybe I just like the idea of a big white space where I can spill paint on the floor and stare out the window.

    1. If you keep coming up with your fun personal stories and maybe I'll get brave enough for some of mine. "Do"? You mean I can't just think about doing?
